PRIMARY USES
Liver and Gallbladder Tonic The bitter principles in dandelion have been shown to stimulate the production of bile as well as the flow of bile from the liver. These actions account for the herb’s common use in the treatment of various types of liver dysfunction such as congested liver and for preventing the formation of gallstones. PLEASE NOTE: Dandelion should not be used by people with existing gallstones unless under the monitoring of a physician. Dandelion should NOT be used in people with obstruction in the bile duct. General liver health Congested liver Gallstones (see contraindications)
Diuretic Weight Control Experimental research shows that dandelion has significant diuretic activity – one animal study suggested that it was comparably effective as the drug frusemide in this respect. Although research on humans is lacking in terms of treatment of obesity, the diuretic effect, combined with the herb’s influence on lipid digestion and metabolism, may provide a useful adjunct to weight management programmes. Fluid retention and bloating Obesity Premenstrual weight gain
